A week or more ago, I arrived at the Casa to find that the window insert in my Bathroom exterior door was shattered to thousands of tiny shards, but still hanging in place due to the safety glass laminate sheet that formed the center of the pane.
That day, after measuring the shattered insert, I rode down to the local Home Freak Show and ordered it’s replacement. I didn't want a single pane insert like the one that shattered so I ordered a double pane insert with built in mini-blinds.
The Mill Work specialist I dealt with indicated it would take a couple of weeks for the glass to come in so I placed the order and paid for the insert. When I arrived back home I grabbed some cardboard and heavy tape as well as some plastic sheeting to cover the shattered window on the outside.
The very next day when I arrived home and entered the house through the garage door, I heard the sound of raining glass when I shut the garage door. The pressure was too much for the shattered window and so it fell out of the door raining down the thousands of shards that had been suspended in the door.
I spent the next hour cleaning up broken glass, fun!
Well, I received a call from the Mill Work guy at Home Freak Show indicating the replacement glass was in his warehouse now and that I could retrieve it at my convenience, which I did last evening on the way home to the Casa. I also picked up a tube of Silicone 2 to seal the exterior edge of the frame.
Removing the old glass frame with the shards of glass around the edges was a real PITA but didn't take too long. Next I had to remove all the silicone sealer from the lip of the door opening so my new silicone would bond to the door.
Installing the new insert was straight forward with the only real challenge being keeping the insert in place while I put the 18 screws in through the inside frame of the new insert, but even that was easy.
So now I have the new window insert that's really nice and functional, providing the internal mini-blinds for privacy.
The Insert was $300 and change and worth it I believe.
