A FlatLand Run to the Border

Saturday I road North on US19 all the way to the Georgia Border. My good friend Steve had ridden down for a visit on Thursday and was heading back to Snellville Georgia, outside of Atlanta.

I decided to give him an escort through FlatLand as we had not had the chance to ride together in a few years.

He was on his BMW K1200LT and I rode the GoldWing on this particularly hot & steamy day, under a heat advisory.

Dave on US19 North

While the thermometer on the GoldWing indicated 97 f. most of the way up & back, the 90% plus humidity made it just about as comfy as riding through a Pizza Oven. The Heat Index was 112 f. according to the weather radio.  Just a touch on the warm side.

I wiped out my cooler full of Diet Mt. Dew while Steve drained his Camel Back along the way.

When we stopped for Petrol, I reloaded the cooler and enjoyed a few moments in the shade of the service station over-hang before continuing on North to Capps Florida and Interstate 10, just couple of miles from the Georgia line.

Steve continued on North toward Albany GA. as I headed back down US19 into FlatLand. By this time it was 2:00pm with the Sun directly overhead and with the steamy sauna like air that just sticks to you as it cooks you to the bone.

I managed to make it back to my little corner of Pasco County before I decided to continue on south to Largo to pick up some excellent take-away for Sue & I.

It was a long & very hot day for riding 510 miles that made me glad to roll into the garage at the Casa.

Steve made it home at 9:00pm Eastern and while talking to him on the phone it was still above 90 f. on my front porch. Such is life in FlatLand.

Hey Bro,

It was great to be with you and Sue for a couple of nights. We need to do that again sometime.

Watching the external temperature gauge on the bike was a real trip on the road home. The 102 degrees on or about Albany was really a trip. Ended up draining the CamelBak twice plus downing a Gatorade for electrolytes was helpful. Still slept well when I got home.

I'll send you a picture of you riding in Flatland to post along with the Tail of Dragon.

Thanks for the escort to the border.

Steve
