The Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

The Grand Prix returns to St. Petersburg this weekend.

The teams started practice today on the closed road course that winds along the waters edge and as well as the length of the local airport where the pits as well as the Start-Finish line are located.

The East side of St. Petersburg is virtually shut down for the race.

The Drivers and teams are all enjoying the night out partying and howling at the moon. They get down to business tomorrow and it will be standing room only around the course as the grand stand seating has been sold out for weeks.

The scenery around the course is beautiful and the weather will be perfect for high speeds.

Here is a link to the course map.

They were still auditioning eye candy today and there is no shortage of hotties to draw from in this area.

The race will be broadcast live on ESPN starting at 2:30 Sunday afternoon.

R1200GS Exhaust Extension Installation

Timing is everything so it seems.  Just minutes after posting about the Exhaust Mods, the Farkle Fairy dropped by with Exhaust Extension.

The kit came packed in a bubble sack and well boxed for shipping.

The pipes and mounting hardware are stainless and well made.

Exhaust end cap screws removed.

They supply three new allen head screws to replace the stock screws.

Spring Tabs installed with the new screws.

Note:  Coat the threads of the screws with Anti-Seize grease.

Pipes installed and springs attached to secure the rig.
Note:  It was a genuine Girl Dog to get the pipes lined up to slip over the end cap tubes.

Done and ready to hang the pannier back in place.

As you can see in this photo, the exhaust plume has discolored the exhaust cut-out of the left pannier.

This was an easy mod that will keep the left pannier nice and cool going forward.
Here is a link to all the photos.

R1200GS Adventure Mods

Remus Y Pipe
I have a couple of Mods on the way for the Adventure.

The Y Pipe (header) to the left is from Remus Racing and will replace the stock header that has a cross-over pipe between the Left & Right pipes and a very heavy Catalytic Converter.
With this header I can use the stock exhaust can without modifying it.

This easy mod should increase the low-end torque and allow the engine to wind up much faster.

Exhaust Extension
The second mod is an exhaust extension.

The goal here is to push the exhaust blast out well clear of the left side case to prevent heat buildup in the side case.

The Remus Header is from Raffy over at Motogear4you.com.
The Exhaust Extension is from AdvWorkshop.com.

Sick and tired of waking up sick and tired

Back from the Doctor's with more diagnosis.

The Flu is waning but I have developed an upper respiratory infection that has brought on Double Pneumonia.

So now three more meds and if not improving by Friday I'll be in hospital.

Happy Happy Joy Joy, at least I know what it is and Doc is confident I'll be back up and around in a week or so.

Sorry for the whining and moaning.

Some people just should not ride a motorcycle

Iknow, it takes all kinds but this takes the cake.

This has got to be one of the stupidest motorcycle modification I have ever seen.

The BabeCage as it's called is tubular steel roll cage.

Just a few observations from the above photo.
Dude has his leg on the inside of the roll cage which is all well and good while they sit upright.  What happens when, lets say, parking lot speeds and the bike gets away from him by falling over to one side or the other.  He sticks his leg out like it is above but with the intention of not letting the bike fall over.  Perhaps it will only break his leg.

Lets add two hundred pounds or so above the CG, this in effect makes his "Babe" weigh in around 350 pounds.

I'm sure they have the best of intentions with this idea but...

Saturday Night Ride

Last evening was just right for a ride.
Anclote Blvd East bound

I left the Casa about 7:30pm for a ride to St. Petersburg to checkout Biff Burger Bike Night.

The weather was perfect at 76 f. and I knew there would be a large turnout.

US19 South Tarpon Springs

The ride south on US19 was smooth but Pinellas Sheriff's Cruisers were out in force.

US19 South Clearwarer

The construction zones on US19 make for interesting riding as the surface changes several times every mile.

Biff Burger

The place was absolutely packed with bikes.

The dude walking around with the clicker taking a count indicated there were 500 plus bikes present.
Biff Burger
There is parking on all sides of Biff Burger and a large gravel lot behind the rear asphalt lot.

Everyone in attendance was having a good time kicking tires and jamming to the live music.

Biff Burger

A nice night for a stroll through the bikes.

Biff Burger

Bikes on the back side of the place.

More of the back side.

One of the many vendors setup around the lots.

Beer Vendor

And yes, there is beer...

Just one of the many nice things about riding in FlatLand.

Commuting in FlatLand - Mar 23

Wilsky Road Southbound
Friday in FlatLand, and what a glorious day!
68 degrees f. when I left the Casa for the commute.

Not a cloud in the sky and light winds make for a wonderful day here in FlatLand.
Wilsky Road Southbound
The Pasco County Sheriff's Department Motor Unit had an ambush setup near the Casa shooting Laser.

They nailed me dead to rights for a velocity award but cut me major slack by writing it as improper passing.

Hey, It's Florida Outside!

Commuting in FlatLand - Mar 22

This morning's commute was in a very comfortable 69 degrees f.

Overcast sky's made for a nice ride East without SOL's blinding glare.
Traffic was light and moved well.

For the first time in a while, I encountered no FHP on patrol.

Have a Great Day and remember, It's Florida Outside!

Explosive Decompression (aka The Flu)

CDC Image
Timing is everything so it is said.

And so it was my time to enjoy the latest strain of Influenza spreading like wildfire over the area.

Several of the Engineers that work for me have been knocked down by this flu while I was out of the office with the DVT.
In the two weeks since I returned to work I have come down with this lovely adventure into rocket propelled dehydration with coughing just hard enough to provide the reverse thrusts to keep one planted firmly on the circular launching pad.

This is the first time in years that I've had the Flu and I can't help but feel it's because I'm on blood thinners. I have no proof of the correlation, it's just a convenient circumstance.

My Doctor's office phoned in prescriptions for Antibiotics and Codeine based cough-syrup.

This cough-syrup has to be the worst tasting oral medication ever concocted with the intent to heal.

The headaches and muscle aches are no fun as I can't take Aspirin, Ibuprofen or Tylenol due to the anti-coagulants I'm also on.

Is it possible to drown in one's sinus drainage? I can hear & feel it in the sinuses around my ears and the pressure above & below my eyes is driving me nuts.

And lastly the fever. A nice slow cook of around 102 f. for four of five days should do it.
So Stay Clear of the Hot Zone!

Commuting in FlatLand - Mar 19

A little chill in the air made for a very nice commute this morning.

47 degrees f. when I pulled out of the Casa and a balmy 50 here at the office.
After a weekend of strong winds it was nice to not get blown around this morning.

This Flu gradeaux grabbed me over the weekend and had me hacking and running a low grade fever.   Makes for a nice weekend, right.

The R1200GS loves this cooler air and wants to leap off the line when I twist the throttle.

What a glorious day in FlatLand and it's Florida outside!

R1200GS - Adventure Mod

The Farkle Fairy (Big Brown Truck) dropped off the latest Touratech goodies for the GS.

I installed the Hand Guard Spoilers on the factory hand guards.

Very easy four step job that took all of 20 minutes.
  Remove the Hand Guard
Mark & Drill the two mounting holes
  Attach the spoiler
  Reinstall the hand guard

The spoilers will deflect the air over the top of the guard and above my hands.

Should keep my hands dryer in the rain.

This is an easy and inexpensive mod that adds to rider comfort.
